Portugal is a country on the western part of Iberian Peninsula, in southwestern Europe. Portugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal. The Atlantic coastline of mainland Portugal stretches for 837 km (520 mi).

The country is split in two by the River Tajeo with the north dominated by mountains and plateaus, dotted with many small farms and vineyards. Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, with the highest point Torre at 1,993 m (6,539 ft). The highest peak of all Portugal territories is Ponta do Pico in the Azores, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft).

The terrain in southern Portugal is dominated by rolling hills and plains - it's the regions of large - scale agriculture and grazing lands. The Algarve region which covers the southernmost part of the country, is dry and known for its fine sandy beaches and interesting rock formations.
