Rome

Rome, the capital city located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river, is considered as the world's most beautiful ancient cities. Its center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many historical sites attract millions of tourists to Rome and most of travelers begin their vacations in Italy with sightseeing trips in Rome. The most famous Rome attractions and landmarks include:

  • Colosseum - the main gladiator arena in ancient Rome;
  • Roman Forum - ruins of many buildings from different periods, formerly a major market place and public area in the ancient Rome;
  • Pantheon - built by Marcus Agrippa originally as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome, now used as church;
  • Trevi Fountain - an impressive monument on the Trevi square in the Quirinale district; the most beautiful fountain in Rome;
  • Piazza di Spagna - a very picturesque square and one of the most popular meeting places in Rome;
  • Catacombs - underground Christian cemeteries from the third to fifth century AD;
  • Arch of Constantine - located between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill, it's a 21 m high triumphal arch, built in 315 AD.

Vatican City

Located in the middle of Rome, the Vatican City is the world's smallest state and a must see for any one visiting Rome. Most famous attractions:

  • Sistine Chapel - a renaissance chapel is famous for its architecture, decorative fresco painted by Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Sandro Botticelli;
  • St Peter's Basilica - a magnificent, huge basilica, finished in 1626, known for its interiors and spectacular dome - 136 meters (446 ft) high - designed by Michelangelo;
  • Vatican Museum holds one of the greatest art galleries in the world, displaying centuries old collections gathered by the Roman Catholic Church.

Venice

The city of Venice in northern Italy, with a population of about 270,000 is considered one of the most unique and most beautiful cities in the world. It's a very popular sightseeing destination - to the extend that crowds of tourists can make main streets of Venice difficult to walk... But if you're on vacation to Italy - without a doubt Venice is a "must see"!

The city has been built on 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon and is famous for its center, where canals serve the function of roads. Venice offers a lot more that a picturesque canal cityscape - other attractions include:

  • Saint Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) - located just off the Grand Canal, this Byzantine basilica is the most famous church in Venice;
  • The Grand Canal - the largest canal in Venice, approximately 3.8 km (2 miles) long, shaped like letter S, goes through the center of old Venice; a gondola trip will let you see most of the attractions located along the length of the Grand Canal;
  • Doge's Palace - an impressive Gothic palace that formerly served as the senate house, administrative center, hall of justice, public archive and prison;
  • St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) - an amazingly beautiful square (actually in a trapezoid shape), the city center for centuries;
  • Peggy Guggenheim Collection - located in Peggy Guggenheim's former home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the museum holds a great collection of European and American art of the first half of the 20th century.

Florence

Florence, with a population of 1.5 million (metro area), originally established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC, is the capital of Tuscany, best known for its Middle Ages and Renaissance art and architecture. In 1982 UNESCO declared the historic center of Florence a World Heritage Site. Millions of tourists visit this city every year to admire Florence landmarks like: Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (The Duomo), Campanile, San Giovanni Baptistery, The Ponte Vecchio bridge, Palazzo Vecchio, Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Bartolomeo Ammanati's Fountain of Neptune, Basilica of San Lorenzo, Great Synagogue of Florence and many more.

Beach Resorts

Other than historical sites and countless marvels of old architecture, Italy offers numerous beach resorts, from small, budget ones to the very luxurious ones. All of them attract more and more tourists year after year, particularly during the summer season. The most popular vacation destinations, beach resort towns and cities include: Sanremo, San Vincenzo, Taormina, Portofino, Positano or San Benedetto del Tronto.
